The Local Area

Goodrington Lodge is in Paignton, part of the English Riviera on the South Devon coastline in Torbay. The English Riviera consists of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.

Paignton is traditionally known as a family holiday resort. Why? Simply because of its beaches and friendly atmosphere. Like all of Torbay, Paignton was frequented by Victorians and some of the architecture still remains. Parts of Paignton can be found in the Domesday book and has been a small fishing port in years gone by. The sea once lapped at where the railway crossing now is, until reclaimed.

Paignton 's waterfront is the focus of life in the town. Paignton sea front, Goodrington promenade with its beautiful illuminated gardens, the sheltered harbour and its coves and beaches make life in Paignton both refreshing and relaxing.

There is an abundance of pavement cafes, pubs, restaurants and nightlife, good quality shops and a host of attractions to suit every interest. Enjoy a meal at one of our recommended restaurants, then take a stroll along the beach. Why not follow this up with a live show or a quiet drink in one of Paignton' watering holes or take the children back to the hotel and sleep peacefully before another day at the beach!

Marldon, a mile behind Paignton beyond the hills is a very old village and stills hold that community atmosphere, with their own country fayre, pubs and village shops. It is from this area that Paignton spread out and down to the bay area. Winner Street being one of the first streets to develop as a trading area behind Palace Avenue and Paignton Church. Many visitors never reach this area, but is well worth walking around. There are small shops, restaurants and Palace Avenue Theatre.

Paignton beaches are without doubt the best in the bay. All the pre-requisites are there: Gently sloping, very sandy, protected from prevailing winds, supported by a good infrastructure of restaurants, bars, ice cream kiosks, beach shops and marine activities.

The beaches stretch for miles and we would recommend (for the energetic) taking a days stroll from the far end of Preston to Elberry Cove and back. This will take you through Paignton Sands, Fairy Cove, Goodrington (North and South) Sands, Three Beaches, Broadsands and over the headland to Elberry cove. Fabulous views, watering holes on the way at Goodrington and Broadsands, sea shell and glass collection and fresh air!
